Predicting the future is a fool's errand — but projecting trends from existing data is not. The Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes detailed employment projections covering 2024 through 2034, based on macroeconomic modeling, industry output forecasts, and historical staffing patterns. These projections are not speculation. They are the federal government's best estimate of where the labor market is heading, updated with data from hundreds of industry surveys and economic models.

We analyzed 952 occupations from O*NET 30.3, cross-referenced with BLS projections, to identify the careers with the strongest growth trajectories through 2030 and beyond. We also layered on three macro trends — AI adoption, demographic shifts, and the energy transition — that are shaping which roles will grow, which will transform, and which will emerge entirely.

The 12 fastest-growing careers through 2034

These are the careers with the highest projected growth rates according to BLS data. Growth rate measures the percentage increase in total employment — a 30% growth rate means the field will have 30% more jobs in 2034 than it did in 2024:

Trend 1: AI-adjacent careers

The biggest misconception about AI and jobs is that AI creates jobs only for AI engineers. In reality, the largest job creation from AI happens in adjacent roles — the people who deploy AI systems, interpret their outputs, ensure their safety, and manage the organizational changes they require. These careers combine high Investigative RIASEC scores with strong growth, driven by AI adoption across industries:

1.Wind Turbine Service Technicians
+45% · $64k
2.Nurse Practitioners
+40% · $132k
3.Nurse Anesthetists
+38% · $237k
4.Data Scientists
+36% · $120k
5.Business Intelligence Analysts
+36% · $120k
6.Clinical Data Managers
+36% · $120k

Trend 2: The aging population and healthcare expansion

By 2030, every baby boomer will be at least 66 years old. The 65+ population is projected to reach 82 million by 2034. This demographic shift is creating massive demand across healthcare, elder services, and social support — and the growth is structural, not cyclical. These careers are growing because the population that needs them is growing, which means demand will persist for decades:

1.Nurse Practitioners
+40% · $132k
2.Nurse Anesthetists
+38% · $237k
3.Medical and Health Services Managers
+29% · $124k
4.Genetic Counselors
+29% · $100k
5.Physician Assistants
+28% · $136k
6.Anesthesiologist Assistants
+28% · $136k

Trend 3: The green energy transition

The Inflation Reduction Act allocated $369 billion to clean energy and climate programs. State-level renewable portfolio standards are mandating increasing shares of renewable electricity. Corporate net-zero commitments are driving demand for sustainability expertise across every industry. These Realistic-heavy careers are growing as the physical infrastructure of the energy transition gets built:

1.Solar Photovoltaic Installers
+48% · $53k
2.Wind Turbine Service Technicians
+45% · $64k
3.Nurse Practitioners
+40% · $132k
4.Nurse Anesthetists
+38% · $237k
5.Geographic Information Systems Technologists and Technicians
+33% · $117k
6.Penetration Testers
+33% · $117k

Emerging high-skill careers

These careers require substantial education (Job Zone 4-5, typically a bachelor's degree or higher) but reward that investment with strong growth and high compensation. If you are a student planning your education path, these are the careers worth investing in:

What this means for career planning

The careers that will dominate in 2030 share a common thread: they combine human judgment with technical capability in areas where demand is structurally increasing. Whether it is interpreting AI outputs, caring for an aging population, or building clean energy infrastructure, the common denominator is work that requires both cognitive skill and human adaptability.

But growth rate alone does not tell you which of these careers is right for you. An Investigative type will thrive in data science but struggle in home health aide work. A Realistic type will excel in wind turbine service but feel trapped in an analyst role. The career projections tell you where the market is going. Your personality profile tells you where you should go within that market.

Ikigai's career quiz combines both signals. It measures your RIASEC profile, work values, and psychological needs, then matches you against 952 careers using real BLS growth data. The Future-Fit Score tells you not just which careers will exist in 2030, but which of those careers you would actually enjoy doing. Free, 5 minutes, no account required.
