Choosing a college major is a $100,000+ decision that most 18-year-olds make with almost no data. They pick based on what classes they liked in high school, what their parents suggest, what their friends are choosing, or what they vaguely associate with a high-paying career. The result is predictable: roughly one-third of college students change their major at least once, adding an average of one extra semester to their timeline and $10,000-$20,000 to their total cost.

Why most major-selection advice fails

The standard advice for choosing a major falls into three equally unhelpful categories:

"Follow your passion." As we have covered extensively in our article on finding your passion, this advice confuses a fleeting emotional state with a durable personality trait. Your passion at 18 may be photography, video games, or marine biology — but passion alone does not predict whether you will thrive academically in a field for four years or professionally for forty.

"Choose what pays well." This leads engineering-averse students into engineering, math-phobic students into finance, and people-oriented students into computer science — all of whom are likely to either switch majors (expensive) or graduate into careers that drain them (more expensive over a lifetime). A high-paying major you cannot sustain is worse than a moderate-paying major you excel in.

"It does not matter, just get any degree." This was arguably true 30 years ago when a bachelor's degree of any kind conferred a significant wage premium. It is less true today.
