Jobs That Sound Almost Identical and Pay $20,000 Apart
Radiation therapist and respiratory therapist differ by $21,540 a year. Sonographer and surgical technologist by $26,860. Similar titles, similar training length, very different money, and the reasons are worth knowing before you pick.

Career advice tends to talk about fields. Healthcare. Tech. Skilled trades. That level of abstraction hides the thing that actually determines your salary, which is the specific occupation you land in, and how similar occupations can be while paying wildly different amounts.
Radiation therapist and respiratory therapist are separated by $21,540 a year. Both are clinical roles reachable on roughly two years of training. Most people considering healthcare have never compared them directly, because they sound like variations of the same job.
Both are two-year clinical credentials. Radiation therapy pays far more and BLS projects it growing 2 percent, which they call slower than average. Respiratory therapy pays less and is growing 12 percent. You are choosing between money now and openings later.
Both put you in a clinical setting on a short credential. Sonography requires an associate degree and pays substantially more; surgical technology is often a postsecondary certificate. The extra year of schooling is doing a lot of work here.
The smaller gap in pay hides a much larger gap in access. Research scientist typically needs a master's degree and the occupation holds 40,300 people. The software occupation holds 1,895,500.
Both analyse data for a living and both start with a bachelor's degree. The actuary passes a long series of professional exams. That exam series is most of the $48,820.
What the gaps are actually made of
Across these four pairs the same three explanations do most of the work.
A gated credential. The actuarial exam series, a master's degree, a specific licence. Where entry is controlled by something difficult and verifiable, pay is higher because supply is genuinely restricted.
Consequence of error. Roles where a mistake is expensive or dangerous carry a premium. That is much of the distance between radiation therapy and other two-year clinical work.
Who ultimately pays. Occupations attached to insurance, defence and capital allocation sit closer to large budgets than occupations attached to general operations, and salaries track that.
The trap in reading these tables
The higher number is not automatically the better choice, and the four pairs above each contain a warning.
Radiation therapist pays $21,540 more than respiratory therapist and is growing at one sixth the rate. Computer and information research scientist pays $9,460 more than software developer, in an occupation of 40,300 people rather than 1,895,500, so the practical difficulty of getting in is far larger than the pay gap suggests.
Pay, growth and workforce size are three different questions. A table that shows you only the first one is not enough to choose on.
The part no table answers
Sonography is quiet, technical, and mostly one patient at a time in a dark room. Surgical technology is a theatre, a team, and time pressure. They pay $26,860 apart and they are completely different days.
